Stoney Creek, Tepperman’s rank high on Wood Furniture Scorecard

STONEY CREEK, Ontario – Two influential Canadian furniture retailers have made the top ranks of this year’s Wood Furniture Scorecard, an initiative of two U.S. based environmental organizations, the National Wildlife Federation and Sustainable Furnishings Council.

Awarded annually, the program’s goal is to encourage furniture retailers to drive responsible wood sourcing practices throughout their supply chains. This year, Stoney Creek Furniture (SCF) was one of 17 merchants from across North America who earned a top score. A total of 118 companies were assessed.

This was the second year SCF made the list and improved its score from 6 in 2020 to 21 this year.

Stoney Creek Furniture also recognizes the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), as well as other third-party certified programs as important tools for promoting responsible forest management. Our buying team will consider wood furnishings that meet our own requirements, such as the bedroom group seen here, and are FSC-certified ahead of other goods available to purchase. The other Canadian retailer to earn a spot on this year’s scorecard was Tepperman’s, the six-unit regional chain based in Windsor. For the consecutive second year, the full-line merchant was named a ‘high scorer’ and improved its score from 15 in 2020 to 18 this year.

In a statement, SCF said accountability through programs like the Wood Furniture Scorecard is vitally important because deforestation is now the second leading cause of climate change, after fossil fuel burning.

Stoney Creek Furniture is an active member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council – a coalition of retailers and manufacturers based in High Point, North Carolina, dedicated to learning and practicing more environmentally-responsible ways to source and produce furniture.

"As a company, we are deeply concerned about the world’s forests, and committed to taking action,” SCF merchandise manager Lori Negrinotti said. “We are ongoing supporters of Tree Canada’s National Greening Program to not only to plant trees but help nurture them into maturity, and internally we are implementing stricter purchasing guidelines and policies on responsible wood sourcing and manufacturing.

“It’s important to us and to our customers. They are investing in quality furniture and ask all the right questions about the origin of the wood used. ‘North American, legally harvested and certified’ are some of the right answers,” she added.

Negrinotti said receiving a top score on the 2021 Wood Furniture Scorecard reflects Stoney Creek’s commitment to forest protection and demonstrates to furniture manufacturers that its retail priorities are more and more with those who think the same way.
