MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – Samsung Electronics Canada (SEC) was named the 2019 Appliance Manufacturer of the Year by Energy Star Canada, a division of Natural Resources Canada. The designation marks the third consecutive win for Samsung across this category and highlights the continued Samsung commitment to energy-efficient product innovation for real-world impact.

“We’re constant in our commitment to innovation that puts Canadian households first,” Warner Doell, SEC senior vice president of consumer electronics business said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing how the evolution of our products continues to benefit Canadians’ bottom-line, helping their finances go further.”

“Energy efficiency in our homes and buildings helps Canadians save money, creates jobs, reduces pollution and contributes to our clean energy future,” added Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi. “I congratulate Samsung Electronics Canada for their ongoing leadership in improving energy efficiency in Canada.”

In its announcement, Natural Resources Canada said there were a number of factors in Samsung Canada’s win, including the addition of 75 Energy Star-certified home appliances in 2018 – an increase of 7% over 2017 and 24% over 2016. Beyond the increase in the number of certified models, Samsung also increased the number of products certified as ‘most efficient’ by 11%, giving them a total of 31 with the designation.

It also marks Samsung Canada’s tenth Energy Star Canada award. Previous wins include Appliance Manufacturer of the Year (2017 and 2018); Electronics Manufacturer of the Year (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018); ‘Energy Star Most Efficient’ Promoter of the Year 2015 (2016); and, Collaborative Initiative of the Year (2012).

In a related announcement, Natural Resources Canada said that this year’s Energy Star Sustained Excellence award was presented to global major appliance resource Whirlpool Canada while Home Depot Canada was named as the program’s Retailer of the Year.

The organisers noted Home Depot Canada as been an Energy Star participant since 2001 and with 182 stores from coast-to-coast it is one of this country’s largest home improvement retailers.

They saluted the retailer for working vendors and utility partners to increase uptake of Energy Star products through instant rebate programs and for hosting some 647 events to educate customers on Energy Star product options.

This is The Home Depot Canada’s eleventh Energy Star award having been named National Retailer of the Year in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The company received the Sustained Excellence in 2012 and was named Advocate of the Year in 2005.
