Mobican donates $50K to refurbish local hospital

ST-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, Quebec – Contemporary furniture manufacturer Mobican has made a $50,000 donation that will help to completely refurbish the psychiatric unit of Hôpital du Haut-Richelieu, it’s local health care provider.

“Mental health is an important issue that affects us all and I believe that when you have the power to contribute in some way, you must step up,” company president Patrick Selmay said in a statement. “St-Jean is my village; this is where I have my network. I was born here and so were my children, so I’m comfortable in my community.”

An active man who enjoys a variety of sports and loves travel to learn about cultures and people, Selmay knows there are many causes needing this kind of support. Still, the local hospital and healthcare was a natural choice that would also reach and rally his entire team.

The production team at Mobican is seen here with a cheque for $50,000 that the contemporary furniture maker donated to Hôpital du Haut-Richelieu to fund the refurbishment of its psychiatric unit.Mathieu Selmay, Mobican vice-president of sales and the third generation of the family to lead the company added he’s in full agreement with his father’s viewpoint.

“We share openly with our employees, we work on the floor with them, we greet them in the morning and say goodnight at the end of each day. We are happy to have a great relationship with them and see that they are at ease talking to us about their lives,” he said.

As an example, he notes the difficulties experienced by many staffers since the pandemic began, from managing work schedules with kids at home to psychological issues as a result of lockdowns and more. “We did everything we could to help them balance all aspects of their personal and work lives, illnesses and restrictions. There is strength in numbers. We all support each other,” Mathieu Selmay said.

Meanwhile, his brother, Nicolas Selmay, who serves as the company’s vice-president of operations, has also seen the toll the past couple of years have taken on people, particularly with regard to mental wellness.

“On a day-to-day basis, we have seen the impacts grow on our employees and their families. They were very touched that we chose to invest in the psychiatric unit improvement project,” he said. “Generally, we don’t talk openly about mental health issues, and I’m glad to see that our choice to contribute to this great project has already led to many people doing so.”

In recent months, Hôpital du Haut-Richelieu and its Fondation Santé has undertaken a fund-raising campaign themed (as translated from the original French) Together, Building a Suitable Recovery Environment.

“We thank Patrick, Mathieu and Nicolas and the entire Mobican team for being among the major donors of the Together, Building a Suitable Recovery Environment project,” a hospital spokesperson said. “Your sincerity and enthusiasm are tremendous assets that benefit Fondation Santé and our entire community.”
