JYSK to open 6 stores

 1 May 2017     HGO Staff

PORT COQUITLAM, British Columbia – JYSK will open six stores across Canada this year while renovating an unspecified number of its existing locations as the Danish furniture and furnishings retailer continues to expand its operations this country. The first of these new outlets is expected open in Hamilton sometime this month.

By year’s end, JYSK should have 63 locations across Canada.

After opening its outlet in South Hamilton Square, the action will shift to Quebec with new stores coming online in Brossard and Laval in June, followed by Sherbrooke in July. The next opening will be in Duncan, B.C. in August followed by Brampton, Ontario in October.

JYSK Canada plans to add six stores to its network in this country before October, bringing its store count to 63.After that, the company – which opened in first Canadian store in 1996 and is occasionally viewed as IKEA’s poor cousin – said it plans to open between five and ten stores each year in Canada.

“Beginning with our new South Hamilton Square store in Ontario Spring 2017, we feel JYSK has a great story to tell. Sales are growing as customers increasingly trust our ‘Quality Design for Less’ mission,” JYSK director of marketing Lynne Williams said in a statement.

Williams added JYSK has been renovating selected Canadian stores to highlight its new store concept.

“Renovations in 2016 were undertaken to enhance our customer’s shopping experience, highlight our unique Scandinavian products, and offer increased convenience for time-crunched consumers through its omni-channel retail operations. Stores are also laid out efficiently and are ‘not big boxes’ so as to not overwhelm shoppers,” she explained.

JYSK stores are typically in the 22,000 to 30,000 square foot size range, although it has a few locations that are both smaller and larger.

The larger stores accommodate an expanded furniture selection and often as house and display outdoor furniture inside the store itself, as outdoor displays can occasionally prove challenging for some retail locations.

The new outlets will also support JYSK’s growth e-commerce efforts. Its web site currently carries in excess of 2,600 products that can be either purchased or reserved online with free pick-up in-store.

JYSK was founded in Aarhaus, Denmark in April, 1979 and sells furniture, mattresses and other home furnishings as well as seasonal furniture predominantly in the entry level to mid-range price points. It is reputedly the largest Danish retailer operating internationally, with some 2,400 stores in 48 countries and expects that count to surpass 2,500 by the fall of 2017.
