Bermex barrels ahead PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael J. Knell

A decade ago, Bermex was a relatively small, little-known casual dining producer. It made a good product and had a reasonable following among retailers, particularly in eastern Canada. But it was just another voice in a big chorus. Today, Groupe Bermex may be the fastest-growing furniture manufacturer in North America.

Although Bermex doesn't publish sales figures, it is in all likelihood one of this country's three largest residential furniture resources. The only two companies with equal or greater heft are Palliser Furniture, the Winnipeg-based upholstery specialist, and Quebec's Dorel Inds., best known for ready-to-assemble furniture sold through North America's largest mass merchants.

On April 20, privately held Bermex will debut its 95,000-square-foot showroom building in the world's furniture capital - High Point, North Carolina - immediately prior to the spring edition of the big market. Within the brick walls of what once was a hosiery mill, Groupe Bermex will display all 10 of its brands, including four it will show in the United States for the first time.

Shermag has expanded Emma, making it a more complete lifestyle collection with bedroom, dining and occasional furniture. The transitional rustic collection is available in a single or two-tone combination finish of Java, seen here, and black chocolate. Crafted in oak solids and veneers, this sideboard will be unveiled at the upcoming High Point Market.

"We want to be a key player in the furniture industry," says Daniel Walker, president and chief commercial officer of the Maskinongé, Quebec-based furniture maker and distributor. The Factory, as the new High Point facility has been christened, will be the platform from which the effort will be driven.

Bermex's growth spurt began in 2005 with the acquisition of Midi, another Quebec-based case goods producer making not just casual dining but wall systems and entertainment units as well. This was followed two years later with the purchase of Dinec, the contemporary casual dining and bedroom specialist which had filed for court protection from creditors in late 2006.

However, the big push came in summer 2009, when Richard Darveau, Bermex CEO, announced he was making a bid for controlling interest in struggling Shermag Inc. and its sister company, the contemporary upholstery specialist Jaymar Furniture.

Originally built over a century ago as a hosiery mill, The Factory officially will open as Groupe Bermex's new High Point showroom facility this Friday, immediately prior to the upcoming spring market. All 10 of the company's brands will be housed here, including four that will be shown for the first time in the United States.

CNW Salvation donation (PD30Jul15)

Some 120 people from across the industry took part in the recent annual golf tournament hosted by Cantrex Nationwide at the Copper Creek Golf Course in Kleinberg, Ontario, just north of Toronto. As has become its usual practise the event benefits a local charity, in this case the Salvation Army. At right, Jeannine Ghaleb, CNW’s president and COO is seen presenting a cheque for $10,000 to the army’s Captain Rick Zelinsky.
