MINDEMOYA, Ontario (06 June 2011) - Joseph Kevin ‘Jake' Mackan, owner of Jake's Home Centre and Jake's Sleep Centre here, died May 27, 2011, after a difficult battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He was 53 years old.

"Let us believe that the dead miss the living and thus be sure that Jake will know in death how much he will be missed among us," his family said in a statement. "He was in the excellent care of some of the best medical personnel in the province at the Sudbury Regional Hospital."

Mackan, who was hailed as "a leader in the business community of Manitoulin," was well known for his humorous radio ads and as a sports fanatic who once brought the Stanley Cup to his store.

Born on Jan. 16, 1958 to the late Kevin and Mae (Taylor) Mackan, he is survived by his partner Tara Bernatchez; his sons Jacob and Lucas; their mother, Pauline; as well as his brothers Don and Bob and sister Maggie (Schut).

Jake's Home Centre, a member of the Dufresne Retail Solutions Group, will now be managed Adam Smith and his long-time employee and friend, Trevor Phillips.

Creation has already taken place. At Mackan's request, there will be no public service and the family will celebrate his life privately.
