Canadians invited to compete in Electrolux design competition PDF Print E-mail

TORONTO (21 March 2011) - Major appliance giant Electrolux is inviting Canadian industrial design students to enter its ninth annual Design Lab competition. This year's theme is Intelligent Mobility and the contest will focus on creative home appliances that provide flexible control.

"Our everyday life is increasingly mobile. We carry work, mail, music and movies with us that we can access at any time," said Henrik Otto, head of global design at Electrolux. "We seek concepts that combine design, today's technology and environmental thinking that will support, guide and inspire."

In a statement, Electrolux said it is challenging Canadian post-secondary undergraduate and graduate industrial design students across the country to compete for the chance to win a paid internship and cash prize.

Competitors must create strategically designed concepts for home appliances that are designed to increase mobility and liberate time. Design concepts should offer personalization while maintaining existing technology to offer support and guidance, and reflect Electrolux's Scandinavian heritage, both aesthetically and environmentally.

This fall, eight finalists will participate in a final event in a yet-to-be-announced European city, where they will present their concept to a jury of expert designers. They will compete for a grand prize of €5,000 (approximately $6,800 CDN) and a six-month internship at one of Electrolux's global design centers. The second prize is €3,000 (approx $4,000) and third prize is €2,000 (approx $2,700).

Entry deadline is Sunday, May 1, 2011. Entrants are invited to register online at
