MONTREAL - Cantrex's recent national convention and trade show here wasn't all business. Over 500 people gathered for a gala dinner to not only renew old friendships but to recognize and celebrate excellence, on the part of both independent retailers and their vendor partners.
![]() Jean Spain, owner of Spain Ltée of La Tuque, Quebec, was the recipient of Cantrex’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award in the furniture, mattress and appliance division. Winning the lifetime achievement award in the furniture, mattress and appliance division was Jean Spain, owner of Spain Ltée, a three-store operation in La Tuque, Quebec. In the floor covering division, the award went to Jim Campbell of United Carpet (Victoria) in Victoria, British Columbia. In the consumer electronics division, the recipient was Jacques Dumoulin of Group Dumoulin, a CE specialist with 100 stores operating under both the Dumoulin and Audiotronic banners across the country. One member from each division was the recipient of a Member Recognition Award, which is based on growth in purchases made through the group, participation in programs and events and improvements to their store. Winning in the furniture division was Daniel Vallée and Nicole Deschaies of Ameublesment Larochelle Inc. of Victoriaville, Quebec. George Mudge, of Mudge's Appliances Ltd. of St. Thomas, Ontario was the honouree in the appliance division. Meanwhile, the winner in the bedding/mattress division was Tracy and Myrna McDiarmid of Mattress Mattress (Saskatchewan), a small chain of bedding stores headquartered in Regina, Saskatchewan. In the electronics division, the award went to Bertrand Bergeron of La Clef de Sol of Quebec City while in the flooring division the award went to Brian Cluett of Sears Floor Covering Centre/Ralph Connor Ltd., a two-unit operation with stores in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick. Cantrex also recognized seven vendors for their contributions over the past year. The winners were selected based on growth in their sales to members as well as the in-store support they provided, promotions offered, efficiency in both service and order processing. In furniture, the award went to upholstery specialist El Ran while Simmons Canada was recognized in the mattress category. Electrolux/Frigidaire was appliance vendor of the year while Nikon Canada was named in the photography division and Panasonic Canada in the consumer electronics division. Beaulieu Canada was named in the floor covering division. Comerco was recognized in the service division. |
